Now that we are right in the middle of the summer season, I thought that it would be fun to talk about something relevant for every mom out there: summer activities!
Come the month of March, there is this dreaded question that every mom faces: what will my kid do during the summer?
I mean, they can’t just play with their iPads all day right?
What if I told you that there is something that the kids can do that is fun, doesn’t involve iPhones, iPads, or any other electronic device, that allows the children’s parents to spend quality time with them, AND helps the kids learn something new all at the same time?
Introducing, Oli, a crafty little quintopus (five-legged octopus) who arrives in his “boxship” bearing the most curious activities, crafts, experiments, and stories:
But wait, what does Oli have in store for us for this month? Let’s take a closer look at Sofie and Chloe’s box:
Oli’s magical box: filled craft activities, a storybook, a magazine, and loads of FUN.
INSIDE OLI’S BOXSHIP
Oli is a quintopus (yep, that’s right), or a five-legged octopus. If you turn him upside down, he looks like a human hand (which symbolizes “craftiness”, or being good with your hands). Pretty neat huh!
But wait. What exactly is Oli’s Boxship, and why should I care?
Well, here’s Oli’s Big Idea:
STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math learning through creative play
Oli’s Boxship is a subscription service that delivers to your doorstep, every month, a beautifully designed box filled with:
- Materials and tools needed for 2 activities (Oli calls these activities “Craftivity” and “Funcycling”)
- A creative play magazine which contains – the instructions for the activities, a comic strip of Oli, and various activities that can be done with coloring pencils or markers, and
- A storybook related to the specific theme of the boxship (for the box we received, it contained the story Mister Beetle’s Special Guitar, since one of the activities was to create your own guitar!)
OLI’S FIRST ACTIVITY: A DRUM, DRUMSTICKS, AND MICROPHONE
For the first activity, the kids and I had fun making a drum, drumsticks, and a homemade microphone!
Oli’s instructions for the first activity

Wait! That’s what little sisters are for!
And here are the results of the two sisters’ afternoon of hard work. Tadaa!

EXTRA BONUSES: THE MAGAZINE, THE STORYBOOK
What’s nice about Oli’s Boxship is that it doesn’t end with the two activities. For example, Oli’s magazine is a work of art unto itself, with well-coordinated colors, graphics, and layouts that are designed to appeal to every child’s (and artist’s) eye:

Oli’s magazine also comes with a free comic strip:
Oh, here’s a good one. The magazine also comes with a really cute coloring activity!
It is never enough for Oli, who has these really cute and interesting activities inside his magazine
What’s more, the Boxship also comes with a storybook called Mister Beetle’s Special Guitar!
THE THINGS I LIKE ABOUT OLI’S BOXSHIP
a) The box and the magazine are well thought out, well designed collaterals that are very pleasing to the eye. In other words, everything about Oli’s Boxship was created with love and great attention to detail.
b) The materials inside are well segregated and packaged with labels. Most of the materials are lightweight and safe to be handled by children. If there are items that require careful handling, Oli packages them properly with warning labels:
c) The activities are moderately simple, nothing to complex for a 4-5 year old kid to handle.
d) The Boxship is jam packed with value: 2 activities, a magazine, and a storybook!
OFF TO THE NEXT ADVENTURE!
After having so much fun with Oli’s first boxship, the kids cannot wait for Oli’s next visit. Heck, evenI’m starting to miss that five-legged blob (oops, quintopus).
If you are the type of mom who would love to organize a craft activity for your kids but just doesn’t have the time, then I highly recommend you to give Oli’s Boxship a try.
